Sara J. McMillan, LCSW, Licensed Psychotherapist

Austin, Texas
(512) 391-0200

Welcome to my website. I have been in private practice in Austin since 1994 and specialize in adult individual counseling or psychotherapy and couple therapy. My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in psychology and clinical social work from the University of Texas. My postgraduate training includes training in assessment, counseling and psychotherapy, and emotionally-focused couple therapy. I also have a degree in art from the University of Texas and, as an artist, enjoy teaching watercolor classes, using art as an adjunct to therapy, and training mental health professionals to incorporate art into their personal or professional work.

Although I am trained in the conventional psychotherapeutic approaches, I recognize that the unique needs and situation of each person will help guide the therapy process. During the intitial session I will review your needs, answer any questions you have, and determine what therapeutic approach and further assessment will be most helpful to you.

I also have a strong interest in depth psychology based upon C. G. Jung's work. From this perspective, I can help you understand the symbolic nature of events that occur in your dreams and waking life which may give more direction and meaning to your life Paying close attention to dreams can realign our human consciousness with the profound healing processes of nature. When we slow down enough to let nature affect us, such as working a shorter week, focusing less on technological gadgetry, having an animal, retreat or plot of land to cultivate and relate to, we become less stressed and often more in touch with our creative selves. Please see my website on the Psychology Today Therapist Directory for more information on workshops and groups I'll be offering in this area, as well as art related classes or workshops.

In working with couples, I help validate each person's point of view, and help each one take responsibility for creating a more secure attachment. Couples begin meeting each other's important emotional needs and are able to confide in each other, comfort each other, and become more mutually available.
